Motion-Activated Home Security Devices

Hi/Lo motion activated lighting systems are home security devices that combine elements of two other kinds of lighting systems. They feature dusk-to-dawn lighting which is operated continuously during the nighttime hours and motion-activated lighting in which lights are activated when surrounding motion triggers a sensor.
In a hi/lo system the lights burn continuously at a low level and brighten when the sensor detects motion. A ballast controls the change in light level, and consumers can choose between various ballast varieties. In one variation, called stepped ballasts, there is a sudden and noticeable change in light level. Dimming ballasts, on the other hand, increase light gradually. The sudden change of light that stepped ballasts provide may offer security advantages as they are more likely to startle and confuse a potential burglar.
